Mobile Rhythm has announced a new iPad drum machine, inspired by old-school drum machines like the Roland TR-606, the mobileRhythm Computer Controlled mR-606 (App Store link):

Inspired by classic drum synths of yesteryear, the mobileRhythm mR-606 is a pocket sized classic in its own right.

A fully featured, yet easy to use interface allows editing of all controls and patterns, and 2 banks of 16 patterns gives you plenty of space to store your creations.

The mR-606 iPad drum machine is $6.99 in the App Store. If you’ve used the Mobile Rhythm mR-606, leave a comment with your thoughts!

Features:

  • set tempo & beatmatch with your favourite music
  • individual level controls for each drum sound
  • easily switch between patterns to create whole rhythm tracks
  • edit scale and last step for fine detail and crazy effects

All controls on the interface work just like the original drum machines of the 80’s.

Wiresq (App Store link) is a $1.99 Turing complete sequencer for generating musical phrases.

It uses Wireworld, a cellular automata that allows for the construction of digital logic circuits to generate audio triggers. You can construct logic gates, memory circuits, calculators and more.

You may be familiar with similar applications that use the Game of Life, but in this cellular automata is much easier to construct stable repeating patterns and logic gates.

It also includes a simple synthesizer with an aggressive filter. “Enough to sketch out your ideas, but not too much to get bogged down in.”

Nanoloop Lite

Developer Oliver Wittchow has released Nanoloop Lite (App Store link) – a free version of his Game Boy style music sequencer.

Nanoloop was originally developed for Game Boy (first release in 1999) and is a popular platform for mobile music creation. The new iPhone version presented here follows the same basic structure and design concept but otherwise it is an entirely new program. It does not simulate the Game Boy’s sound or other functions but has been fully optimised for the iPhone’s capabilities.

Lite Version Limitations:

  • Projects can not be saved or sent, only the current status is kept in memory. The current project can be exported to the full version (if installed on the same device).
  • Sample memory is limited to five files.

Otherwise, the lite version is fully functional and shares all features of the full version:

  • Straight, minimalistic graphical interface
  • Pattern-based stepsequencer
  • 6 channels, each can be synth or sampler
  • Song editor with loop function
  • Synth with envelope, filter, lfo etc
  • Sample on the fly
  • Re-sampling

Synth

The simple but powerful synthesizer allows to create a great bandwidth of sounds, including beats, noises, basses and pads. Available synthesis types are:

  • rectangular wave with filter
  • FM
  • LFSR noise generator

Each synth channel is two-voice polyphonic and an additional stereo effect can be applied.

Sampler

  • Samples of 1 sec length (44 kHz, mono) can not just be used in a drum-machine style, but also be pitched and played as notes.
  • Samples can be recorded via microphone (iPhone only), headset microphone (iPhone, iPod touch 2nd gen only) and from nanoloop’s own sound output.

Max For Live

Liine has released a free Max For Live device, Kapture, that was originally created for Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman Live tour.

The sounds and sonic signatures in Plastikman Live are heavily reliant on complex configurations of sends, returns and feedback loops, as well as combinations of instrument and effect parameters. Liine’s challenge was to build a system to manage this huge number of parameters in a live scenario.

Kapture is the solution that they came up with. Similar to a preset management system for the whole of Ableton Live, it lets you “Kapture” the state of your set.
