Tesco Goes MP3

Filed under: Uncategorized | Back to: Homepage

In May the infamous British stores Tesco are going to start selling music through the Internet, so becoming one of the Apple iTunes Store’s rivals, writes The Daily Telegraph.

Tesco Digital shall offer 3,3 million tracks to it’s customers. Offered music will be compatible with various mp3 players including iPod.  Also, this new online store will allow to download TV series and shows including computer games. When this service starts only 1,6 million tracks will be available in mp3 format. By the end of this year all the music should be transfered to this format.

Right now Tesco is already working with selling of digital music.  However, it’s functionality is limited and tracks are sold only in Windows Media format; so it cannot be heard using all the players.

It is not the first Tesco’s project which is splitting with their traditional business direction – selling of food and clothing. Last year this company began to work in retail business.

Audio Copying Is Taking More Control

Filed under: Uncategorized | Back to: Homepage

Ninety five percent of the British young people are stealing music in one or another form.  This was a result of the study (based on questioning) made by Hertfordshire university specialists among 1158 young people with the age ranging from 18 to 24.

Also, respondents were telling that they’re making illegal audio disk copies for their friends (an average five disks per month), writing music on to computers etc.

Following this study, an average young person in Britain is un-paying 750 pounds to the music industry, receiving it from his/her friends for free.  Experts believe that this problem is particularly the strongest in Britain in comparison to other countries (and even worse than direct mp3 downloading).  In fact only one out of 20 tracks is purchased legally. Above all young people are not taking these procedures as violation of something.

A study was carried out on the order of the British Music Rights headed by The Understones ex-vocalist Feargal Sharkey.  Following his words this is the first academic study which is aimed to help modern psychology of the music market, it’s tendencies, movements and goals.
