Part oscilloscope and part theremin. Part music and part science. Part instrument and part trip toy. Instead of simply displaying a waveform, Sound Scope lets you interactively sculpt sound by shaping sound waves with its unique touch interface!

Play it like an instrument, simply pinching with two fingers. You get full volume control, and the pitch spans an enormous range, from the deepest bass to an ear-piercing screech. Try for vibrato and tremolo effects with a little finger wiggle!

One of the keys to making good music is mindless repetition. That is what the simple sequencer is great at. It does the same thing over and over again in an eight note sequence. You can adjust the frequency of the note, the duration of the note and the pause between notes. If you get really good, you can anticipate the next note and change things up on the fly. This little box is sure to provide endless hours of fun.

With a total of 9 knobs, the Drone Commander offers two manually-tuned oscillators and two LFOs, plus an unusually colorful and nasty filter. LFO1 is an analog variable-shape oscillator, and LFO2 is a pulse waveform that auto-synchronizes to LFO1 at a ratio of 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Both LFOs can be routed to the filter for rhythmic patterns. A line-level output jack is provided for connection to amplifiers or effects.

Six of the Drone Commander’s nine knobs double as push-pull switches to control signal routing and waveform selection.

The Drone Commander is housed in a dark green military ammunition case with engraved aluminum control panel. The case is welded steel with an easily removable, rubber gasketed lid.

The unit is powered by a 9V battery accessible through a slide-out drawer in the side, as well as a 9VDC adapter.

Live and entertainingly noisy synthesiser, responding to multitouch and accelerometer control. You can control up to three independent voices at once.

The sound synthesis method is GENeral DYNamic stochastic synthesis, as pioneered by Iannis Xenakis.

Imagine a set of control points (CPs) which together define the shape of a time domain waveform; with each new cycle through this waveform, their relative positions are updated using probabilistic distributions.

This application was developed by Nick Collins, and is distributed for free. Nick runs the music informatics degree programs at the University of Sussex, UK.
